The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
